چکیده

Sir—We appreciate Dr Liu's suggestions regarding a number of factors that may account for the relationships we reported between pattern of alcohol intake and body mass index in the Lung Health Study. Some of these hypotheses can be addressed by supplementary analyses and others are beyond the scope of data obtained in the Lung Health Study. First, control for the degree of lung impairment— expressed as either the forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) or the ratio of this measure to the forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC)—had no effect on the strength of the relationships we reported, although as would be expected, both lung function parameters had a significant independent relationship with body mass index. Second, collinearity between total weekly alcohol intake and drinks per drinking day is not a likely explanation for these findings. As noted in the original paper, the Lung Health Study specifically excluded

Nonsmoking-related arylamine exposure and bladder cancer risk.

Roughly one-half of bladder cancer incidence in the United States can be attributed to known causes, mainly cigarette smoking, and it has been hypothesized that the aromatic amines in tobacco smoke are important etiological agents. Nonsmokers are also exposed, through unknown sources, to many of the same carcinogenic aromatic amines that are present in cigarette smoke. Previous epidemiological ...

Molecular genetics and function of NAT1 and NAT2: role in aromatic amine metabolism and carcinogenesis.

Aromatic and heterocyclic amines require metabolic activation to electrophilic intermediates that initiate carcinogenesis. N-Acetyltransferase 1 (NAT1) and 2 (NAT2) are important enzymes in the biotransformation of these carcinogens and exhibit genetic polymorphism. Human NAT1 and NAT2 alleles are listed at: http://www.louisville.edu/medschool/pharmacology/NAT.html by an international gene nome...

Mortality and incidence of cancer in a cohort of Swedish chimney sweeps: an extended follow up study.

Despite 200 years of efforts to regulate safety in this occupation, chimney sweeps have increased mortality from cancer, ischaemic heart disease, and respiratory disease. Mortality and incidence of cancer were examined in a cohort of 5542 Swedish chimney sweeps employed through their national trade union at any time between 1918 and 1980. Previous studies of this cohort found increased risks of...

An etiologic prediction model incorporating biomarkers to predict the bladder cancer risk associated with occupational exposure to aromatic amines: a pilot study

BACKGROUND No etiological prediction model incorporating biomarkers is available to predict bladder cancer risk associated with occupational exposure to aromatic amines. METHODS Cases were 199 bladder cancer patients. Clinical, laboratory and genetic data were predictors in logistic regression models (full and short) in which the dependent variable was 1 for 15 patients with aromatic amines r...

Occupational exposures and squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, and oesophagus: a case-control study in Sweden.

OBJECTIVES This community based case-referent study was initiated to investigate aetiological factors for squamous cell carcinoma of the upper gastrointestinal tract. METHODS The study was based on all Swedish men aged 40-79 living in two regions of Sweden during 1988-90. Within that base, efforts were made to identify all incident cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, orophary...
